The Flag Retirement Ceremony at Brandywine Battlefield Park is a deeply respectful, patriotic, and somber community event held annually over Veterans Day weekend. The Residents Association partners with the Brandywine Battlefield Park to honor our Veterans. This event is a formal flag retirement ceremony hosted by our local American Legion Posts and several Boy Scout Troops. It provides a rare opportunity to witness a formal, dignified disposal of unserviceable American flags.

People are invited to bring their used and worn American flags to this event. The Association also collects flags throughout the year at our special collection box at the Chadds Ford Township Municipal Building and our flag collection event in the spring. 

This is a rare opportunity to see a formal flag retirement ceremony which includes flag folding, flag dedications and a special flag burning.  

 Here is what you can expect if you attend the ceremony:
The event is highly structured and adheres strictly to the U.S. Flag Code, which states that burning is the most dignified way to retire a flag that is worn, torn, or faded beyond repair.

The Procession and Dedications: The ceremony begins with a formal color guard presentation. Leaders from the American Legion and Scout troops will offer remarks, historical context, and formal flag dedications to honor the service of past and present veterans.

Flag Folding: Before retirement, a flag is ceremonially folded into the traditional tri-corner shape, with speakers explaining the meaning behind each of the 13 folds.

The Retirement (Flag Burning): The heart of the ceremony involves the respectful placing of the flags into a controlled, sacred fire. The atmosphere during this portion is typically completely silent, save for the occasional playing of Taps or patriotic music, allowing attendees a moment of quiet reflection on the country's history and sacrifices.  

Community Participation

This is not just a spectator event—it relies heavily on community involvement. The public is highly encouraged to bring their own old, torn, or faded American flags to be retired during the ceremony.  Year-Round Collection: If you cannot make it to the event but have a flag that needs retirement, local drop boxes (such as the one at the Chadds Ford Township Municipal Building) collect flags throughout the year specifically for this weekend.  

Held on the historic grounds of Brandywine Battlefield Park in Chadds Ford, PA, the setting adds an immense layer of historical gravity. You will be standing on the 52-acre epicenter of George Washington’s continental encampment during the largest single-day battle of the American Revolution. Because the ceremony takes place outdoors in early November, the weather can be quite brisk. It is highly recommended to dress in layers and bring lawn chairs or blankets, as seating on the park grounds is typically first-come, first-served. The event usually lasts about an hour (typically in the early afternoon, around 2:00 PM) and is entirely family-friendly, making it an excellent, tangible history and civics lesson for younger generations.
